On Safer Internet Day we come together for a better internet
This Tuesday 5 February is Safer Internet Day! Thousands of schools and organisations throughout the UK will come together to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.
With the theme ‘Together for a better internet,’ the campaign in the UK focuses on empowering young people to take control of their digital lives and consider how consent works in an online context.
Safer Internet Day (SID) is celebrated globally in February each year to raise awareness of e-safety issues amongst children and young people.
Last year 45% of young people across the UK heard about SID and as a result of the day three quarters of parents and carers across the UK said they talked to their child about using the internet safely. We also saw over 1,700 organisations unite to raise awareness of online safety issues and run events and activities right across the UK.
As part of the UK Safer Internet Centre (UKSIC), we help organise and support SID, alongside Childnet International and SWGfL (South West Grid for Learning). The partnership was appointed by the European Commission in January 2011 and is one of the 31 Safer Internet Centres of the Insafe network. Our partnership helps make the internet a better place.
How can you support #SaferInternetDay2019?
On Safer Internet Day there will be national events, activities in schools, media coverage, lots of social media engagement, as we all aim to reach as many children and families across the UK as possible. You can help us make this happen.
Thousands of schools, tech companies, police services, charities, football clubs and other organisations across the UK are invited to get involved in the campaign to inspire a safe and positive use of technology.
