Highlights of 2007

January
A number of meetings and exhibitions were attended, including the All Party Parliamentary Group on Communications; ISPA's Annual Parliamentary Advisory Forum; the Internet Crime Forum; the BETT Show 2007; and an INHOPE conference in Madrid.
 
February
The IWF joined more than 120 organisations from 43 countries in celebrating the fourth Safer Internet Day. The event was organised by European Schoolnet, coordinator of Insafe, the European safer internet network.
 
ISPA AwardsThe IWF ISPA award for most significant contribution to the fight against online child sexual abuse content during the past decade was won by the Home Secretary’s Task Force on Child Protection on the Internet and particularly the Secretariat for continuing to provide a hugely successful multi-agency forum to enable a vast array of experts to contribute towards policies and good practice documents to make the internet a safer place for children.
 
The IWF also attended the European launch of the Family Online Safety Institute and the Childnet International Impact Event.
 
We carried out our annual Library campaign by sending IWF materials to all UK Central libraries.
 
March
IWF was pleased to host a week long visit by the South African Hotline for the purpose of sharing expertise and experience. We also attended a debate on Government plans to criminalise the possession of extreme pornography, a number of operational meetings with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and various sub-groups of the Home Secretary’s Task Force on the Protection of Children on the Internet.
 
April
Rt Hon Stephen Timms MPIWF launched the 2006 Annual Report, generating over 450 pieces of national and international media coverage.
 
Following the launch of the Annual Report, the Rt Hon Stephen Timms MP, Minister of State for Competitiveness, and the Rt Hon Margaret Hodge MBE MP, Minister of State for Culture, Media and Sport, hosted a meeting at Number 11 Downing Street to discuss some of the most pressing concerns raised by the Report with key stakeholders. Speakers and participants included Home Office Minster, Vernon Coaker MP; Clive Ansell, BT Group Strategy Director and Matthew Kirk, Vodafone Group Director of External Partnerships.
 
We also participated in an INHOPE meeting in Cologne and attended a EURIM House of Lords Reception.
 
May
IWF Hotline Manager, Adrian Dwyer, was elected as Vice President of INHOPE, the association of Hotline providers. We began the process of recruiting four Non-Executive Directors to our Board to help drive the strategic focus of the IWF’s fight against illegal content which led to the successful candidates being announced in August.
 
We met with marketing and PR representatives from our member companies to better harness their communications resources in planning for the first IWF Awareness Day which followed in October.

Other activities included two members days at IWF offices and individual briefing sessions with UK MPs.
 
June
IWF advertOur Ten Year Anniversary Campaign was a finalist in the Marketing Society Awards for Excellence 2007, nominated in the Marketing A Cause (Not For Profit) category.
 
Entrants to this category were shown to have delivered a tangible and lasting effect and were judged on the following criteria: clear and differentiated activity; change of public perception; value delivered to cause or audience; sustainability; longevity and effective use of marketing resources.
 
We attended and participated in several events during June, including CEOP’s one year anniversary event; an Internet Governance Forum meeting at the Houses of Parliament; the Cyber Security KTN Annual Conference and an INHOPE meeting in Luxembourg. We were invited to speak about the role of the IWF and the success of our self-regulatory model by organisations including the Council of Europe and the Catholic Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults. Our ‘Hotline’ hosted several visits in our commitment to sharing expertise and developing partnerships including law enforcement officers from Turkey. IWF staff also held briefing meetings with a number of UK MPs.

July
We held our AGM and annual strategy event with our Board and industry members at the BT Tower in July. In addition, we hosted several visits including from the new Portuguese Hotline. IWF was represented at a number of events including the Home Secretary’s Taskforce on the Protection of Children on the Internet, ISPA’s Summer Reception and the launch of the All Party Parliamentary Communications Group (apComms).

August
Four new IWF Board Members were appointed; two to fill immediate vacancies and two to replace retiring Board members on 1st January 2008. For full details of those appointed, please click here.

National Business AwardsThe IWF was a finalist in the 2007 National Business Awards, a leading programme in recognising excellence in business achievement, innovation and success in the UK. The Better Regulation Award is sponsored by The Better Regulation Executive, part of the Cabinet Office, which works across Government to support and challenge departments and regulators as they reduce and remove regulation across the private, public and voluntary sectors.

Further to this the IWF attended several events, conferences and meetings in August, including with INHOPE; CEOP and EURIM. We also visited the US Hotline, Cybertipline, part of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, with aims to share knowledge and expertise.

September
In September, the IWF continued its knowledge sharing and international liaison with a number of key bodies and organisations working in internet crime, education and within the online industry. We participated in the Internet Crime Forum; the Broadband Stakeholder Group, contributed to a Becta consultation and had a number of operational collaborations with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre. We met individually with Parliamentarians responsible for issues in the area of illegal online content and, via our position on the INHOPE Board, carried out visits to new Hotlines in the Czech Republic and Portugal as part of our commitment to share best practice and guide emerging Hotlines in their activities.
 
ISO27007Following a very comprehensive inspection the IWF were ISO27001 accredited in September. The ISO27001 standard is designed to help establish and maintain an effective information management system, using a continual improvement approach. It implements organisation for economic cooperation and development (OECD) principles, governing security of information and network systems.

The IWF was also short-listed for Nominet’s Best Practice Challenge Award in the Security category. Although originally entered and shortlisted in the Security category, the judges believed that both the IWF and the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre should receive a Special Award for multi-stakeholder cooperation for their exemplary co-operative approach involving industry, charities, police and Government and the outcomes achieved.

October
IWF Advert24 October saw the first IWF Awareness Day. Our industry members and stakeholders provided fantastic support by running adverts on their websites and intranets and other communications channels, and by emailing their customers and staff with information about our work.

The aim of the day was to reach out to the UK’s vast online population to raise awareness of our 'Hotline' and let them know that the IWF is dedicated to getting potentially illegal online content removed.

The media coverage we received for the day was very impressive with almost 300 articles, including 70 radio and TV broadcast features – regional, national and international. Our website statistics show we had a 320% increase in visitors on Awareness Day and the day after.

We also launched the final stages of our Ten Year Anniversary Road Show in October with a conference in Edinburgh which was kindly hosted by Marlyn Glen MSP for North East Scotland. The conference was a great success, with over 100 delegates representing industry, child protection, teachers, police, IT professionals, Government and charities. The panel discussion was hosted my Alex Hastie, Talk 107 Radio.
 
In addition we hosted an IWF Members Day and a visit from a UN representative; attended the Annual Parliament and the Internet Conference; held a number of operational meetings with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre; took part in EURIM activities; attended Ofcom’s Annual Lecture and participated in a number of INHOPE meetings.
 
November
We completed our UK Road Show in November with conferences in Belfast and Cardiff.

The Belfast conference was hosted by Dr Alasdair McDonnell, MP for Belfast South. The Cardiff conference was hosted by John Smith, MP for the Vale of Glamorgan. The Belfast panel discussion was hosted by Stephen Nolan, BBC 5 Live and BBC Northern Ireland and the Cardiff panel discussion was hosted by Broadcaster Sara Edwards.

We attended the Internet Governance Forum in Rio de Janeiro and presented to a Chinese Government delegation, met with our INHOPE partners in Prague and had a best practice sharing meeting with representatives from French law enforcement agencies.

December
We hosted operational meetings with Ofcom; CEOP and the US Hotline, CyberTipline which forms part of the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children as well as presenting at a media conference for the protection of children and young people in Hungary.
