Freedom2Surf Safely   20th September 2004

Freedom2Surf, one of the UK's leading independent broadband ISPs, has become a member of the Internet Watch Foundation.

Their pledge to support the organisation means that through financial contributions to the foundation, Freedom2Surf will help the IFW to carry out its important role in providing an internet ‘hotline’ for all UK internet consumers to use.

Many UK ISPs are members of the IWF and recognise the need to take measures against illegal internet content which may corrupt their services and jeopardise their customers’ right to an abuse free online environment.

Chris Panayis, Managing Director, Freedom2Surf, commented:
"Internet service providers have a responsibility to do everything in their power to clamp down on child pornography on the Internet. The Internet Watch Foundation is playing a pivotal role in tackling the distribution of illegal material and Freedom2Surf is delighted to be partnering with the organisation.
Freedom2Surf has always been committed to providing customers with a safe and secure Internet experience and we will be working closely with the IWF over the coming months to develop new solutions to help eradicate this type of content from the Internet"
The IWF helps UK ISPs to combat abuse of their services by operating a ‘notice and take down’ service which alerts them to any illegal content found on their system.

As a result of this service, industry co-operation and IWF partnerships, illegal content hosted in the UK has been reduced from 18% in 1997 to less than 1% at the end of 2003.

Peter Robbins, CEO, IWF:
We always welcome new members because their support has a direct impact on the work we do; now and in the future.
Online content is delivered to consumers via commercial services, so whilst our ISP member companies do not create this material, they are very conscientious in taking steps through their membership in trying to minimise their customers’ exposure to potentially illegal content.

This partnership is absolutely crucial because less access to this content, means less demand, which means less abuse of children to create indecent images.”

Alongside industry members and relationships, the IWF has alliances with UK Government Departments such as the Home Office and the Department of Trade and Industry to influence initiatives and programmes developed to combat online abuse.
This dialogue also goes beyond the UK and Europe to ensure greater awareness of global issues and responsibilities.

ABOUT THE INTERNET WATCH FOUNDATION
The UK Internet Industry founded the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) in 1996.
The IWF is uniquely placed in that it is the only authorised organisation in the UK that provides an Internet ‘Hotline’ for the public to report their exposure to illegal images online. It is strongly supported by the Government and Police to minimise the availability of illegal content on the Internet with particular reference to child abuse images originating anywhere in the world, criminally racist and criminally obscene content hosted in the UK..
It operates independently of Government and receives no annual funding from it.
The major part of financial support for the IWF comes from organisations commonly associated with the internet, such as ISP’s, Telco’s, content providers, mobile operators and manufacturers and other relevant organisations.
The IWF, in partnership with many other organisations, has an education and awareness role so that, as more and more people make more and more use of the Internet, some of the problems of Internet use - particularly the risks to children - and the mechanisms for dealing with these problems are better known and understood.
