Samsung become the first mobile manufacturer to join the IWF

The IWF are pleased to announce that mobile manufacturer, Samsung, have just joined as a funding member.

Samsung are the first mobile manufacturer to take the initiative in supporting the IWF and in so doing acknowledging their wider responsibilities in the way their technologies and products will facilitate the accessibility of mobile internet content.

On joining the IWF as a funding member, Mark Mitchinson, General Manager of Samsung Mobile UK, says:
"When presented with the opportunity to join the IWF there was never any doubt that this was an initiative we were going to support. As a mobile manufacturer we have a responsibility to ensure that our customers are protected when accessing internet content through their mobile phones. We are happy to partner with the IWF and aid them in educating and raising awareness in order to make the internet a safer place for everyone."

The Internet Watch Foundation has a very good working partnership with all the UK Mobile Network Operators on safety & responsibility issues over the future development of 3rd generation mobile services and the interest now shown by Samsung will add value to the ongoing debate on this vital topic.

All mobile users can now easily report any illegal content they may inadvertently be exposed to through the IWF WAP site at www.wap.iwf.org.uk

Peter Robbins, IWF CEO:
“We are very pleased to be working with Samsung and applaud their conscientious and responsible attitude in supporting the IWF and the work we do. This very much compliments the ongoing work we are engaged in with the Mobile Operators and their Code of Practice on internet content. It is very important that there are safeguards in place to protect mobile consumers from potentially illegal content as new mobile internet technologies develop .”

About the IWF
The UK Internet Industry founded the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) in 1996.
The IWF is uniquely placed in that it is the only organisation in the UK that provides an Internet ‘Hotline’ for the public to report their exposure to child abuse images online. It is strongly supported by the Government and Police to minimise the availability of illegal content on the Internet with particular reference to child abuse images originating anywhere in the world.
It operates independently of Government and receives no annual funding from it.

The major part of financial support for the IWF comes from organisations commonly associated with the internet, such as ISP’s, Telco’s, content providers, mobile operators and manufacturers and other relevant organisations.

The IWF, in partnership with many other organisations, has an education and awareness role so that, as more and more people make more and more use of the Internet, some of the problems of Internet use - particularly the risks to children - and the mechanisms for dealing with these problems are better known and understood.
