New IWF Board member - mobile industry representative

Hamish MacLeod has co-ordinated the Mobile Broadband Group (MGB) since the beginning of 2002. The group brings together the five mobile network operators in the UK, to work jointly on a number of public policy issues, such as new legislation and developing self-regulatory codes.

Prior to the MBG, Hamish worked from 1995 to 2001 with the TIW Group of companies in a number of subsidiaries, which included Oasis Cellular in Rajasthan and Dolphin Telecom in Europe, where he was Head of Finance for Networks and latterly Head of Regulatory Affairs.

Hamish is a Chartered Accountant, a graduate of Aberdeen University and holds an MBA from City University Business School. “I am delighted to join the board of the IWF, to represent the Funding Council and to bring a perspective from the mobile sector. The mobile operators are very pleased to have the resources of the IWF available to them in the battle against the distribution of illegal material on the Internet."

All five major network operators are full members of the IWF.

As each operator develops its own commercial specialist services with respect to internet content, we are pleased to work with Hamish and the respective companies, to ensure that we can offer a bespoke service to the operators and that we understand respective needs for now and in the future, should potentially illegal material surface on their facilities.

The IWF was involved in the consultation process by all mobile operators on a Code of Practice for the self regulation of new forms of content via mobile phones, which has been a concern for child safety and protection organisations and has been highlighted in the media.

Peter Robbins, IWF CEO:
“We are working very closely with all the mobile network operators to ensure that any problems of potentially illegal content that may appear on their facilities in the future are minimised. We are confident that together with the operators we are well prepared to cope with any potential problems of illegal mobile internet images and to provide an effective support mechanism to them and the law enforcement agencies. We are very pleased to welcome Hamish to the IWF Board which serves to reiterate the importance of our role within mobile internet services.”
