IWF Presents Award for Internet Safety

Thinking its about time that somebody got an award for making life safer rather than more profitable, with generous sponsorship from WorldCom, IWF has created a new "ISPA" for improvements in Internet Safety.
Shortlisted candidates were:
  • The Football Assocation - for integrating online safety into wider child protection in sport programme
  • The Home Office - for Task Force on Child Safety on the Internet
  • The BBC for its online safety guidelines
  • Thames Valley Police / Royal Air Force - for Chat Safe project
  • Childnet International - for NetBenefit scheme (we are grateful to Childnet for withdrawing its nomination to avoid any question of conflict of interest - Childnet is represented on the IWF Board)
The Winner: BBC
Roger Darlington, Chair of the Internet Watch Foundation, said, “The BBC has successfully transferred its trusted brand to the new on-line world and ensured that its on-line content and activities are as safe, secure and child-friendly as is practically possible.
This is excellent work in itself, but it is also a powerful message to other on-line providers and we are delighted to be able to acknowledge this effort and endeavour.”

Candidates for this award were judged on their ability to meet one or more of the following:
  • Facilitate constructive dialogue aimed at improving online safety
  • Communicate and promote advice and information to empower users to protect themselves online
  • Develop and/or implement effective mechanisms – whether technical or otherwise – to foster the safest possible online experience, particularly for young users
